A visually stunning integrated primary healthcare and social services centre, The Heart of Hounslow Centre for Health is one of the largest of its kind in Britain. With its cathedral like coloured glass atrium, it signals the arrival of a new kind of health centre for Hounslow Primary Care and the local community.
Covering nearly 9,000 sq metres over six floors, the centre brings together twelve key departments set each side of a welcoming and gently meandering central atrium. Home to three GP Practices, the new centre will host a range of community care services including improved outpatient facilities, social care outreach, services for children and care for people with learning disabilities. There will also be a health information centre, a therapy gym to aid rehabilitation and a café.
The striking building is clad in grey terracotta and coloured aluminium panels and features a brilliantly coloured glass atrium, which fills the central space with light and colour. Approximately 400 members of staff will use the centre, providing much needed services to patients in the community and reducing hospital visits.
Phase II of the scheme will see the construction of 79 apartments, a mixture of affordable and privately owned. Introduced by Building Better Health using its private sector development experience, this element of the scheme provides best use of the land and creates a revenue stream. It has also provided Hounslow Primary Care Trust with a subsidy to finance the centre.
"I've seen a lot of LIFT projects around the country, I have three in my own constituency, but this is a different quality altogether - this is as good as it gets."
Andy Burnham MP, Minister of State for Delivery & Reform at the Department of Health
