The four-storey 3,400m2 centre brings together community-based Therapy services, a Mental Health unit and two GP practices. The building has been designed to create a calm and therapeutic health care environment, and an exemplary work setting for staff.
Architects Buschow Henley also adopted a radical strategy of eliminating colour and signage as a means of orientation - making use of natural light and space instead.
St John's Therapy Centre is organised around two courtyards, with a circulation system of cloisters that leads visitors to waiting spaces and reception areas. Designed with flexibility in mind to cater for future needs, each of the floors is organised with a well-defined front-ofhouse and back-of-house, linked by clusters of clinical accommodation with singleloaded corridors.
The west wing of the ground floor is dedicated to drugs and alcohol treatment facilities, and mental health, while two GP surgeries are located to the east. The first floor includes a therapy centre, with offices and laboratory space on the second level and a staff room on the top floor.
Naturally ventilated, the building's reinforced concrete skeleton is enclosed with a rainscreen cladding, polished with high-density veneered external facing panels in rich, conker-like red-brown.

"The new St John's Therapy Centre means major improvements for both patients and staff. It is essential that we continue to invest in improving our services in a safe, clean and modern environment, if we are to go on providing the high quality service."
